Dacryocystitis is infection of the lacrimal sac, usually secondary to nasolacrimal-duct obstruction causing stasis. It may be acute (painful swelling over medial canthus, fever) or chronic (recurrent epiphora, discharge). Clinical: tearing, discharge, swelling/tenderness over the lacrimal sac. Treatment: systemic antibiotics for acute; warm compresses; treat obstruction by probing/silicone intubation in children or dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) in adults; drain abscess if present.
