Lacrimal-passage obstruction is blockage anywhere along the tear-drainage pathway (punctum/canaliculus/nasolacrimal duct), causing epiphora (overflow tearing). It may be congenital (infants) or acquired (adults, stenosis/atresia). Treatment: punctal dilation for punctal stenosis; probing/silicone intubation for canalicular/nasolacrimal obstruction; dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) for persistent nasolacrimal-duct obstruction.
Overflow tearing (epiphora); discharge; recurrent infection; worse by location of blockage
Congenital or acquired stenosis/atresia blocks tear drainage, causing epiphora and stasis.
Punctal dilation; probing/silicone intubation; DCR for nasolacrimal obstruction
Tear-system probing in infants; lid hygiene.
It is recommended to visit the Ophthalmology department; an appointment can be booked on this platform before the visit.
