Enophthalmos is posterior displacement (sunken appearance) of the eyeball, usually due to orbital-wall fracture (blowout fracture with increased orbital volume) or orbital fat atrophy. Clinical: sunken eye, diplopia, enophthalmos after trauma. Treatment: observation if mild; surgical orbital-wall reconstruction for symptomatic/marked enophthalmos or diplopia; treat underlying atrophy.
Sunken eye; diplopia; history of orbital trauma/fracture; orbital fat atrophy
Orbital-wall fracture increases orbital volume, allowing the globe to sink posteriorly.
Observation if mild; surgical orbital-wall reconstruction if symptomatic
Repair orbital fracture; treat atrophy.
It is recommended to visit the Ophthalmology department; an appointment can be booked on this platform before the visit.
