Bullous keratopathy is corneal edema with epithelial bullae due to endothelial-cell failure, most often after cataract surgery (pseudophakic bullous keratopathy) or Fuchs endothelial dystrophy. Clinical: painful recurrent bullae, blurred vision, and grittiness from ruptured bullae. Treatment: hypertonic saline/drops, lubrication, bandage contact lens; endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK/DSEK) for definitive treatment.
Painful epithelial bullae; blurred vision; grittiness; post-cataract/Fuchs history
Corneal endothelial failure allows fluid accumulation, causing stromal/epithelial edema and bullae.
Hypertonic saline/lubrication/bandage lens; endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK/DSEK)
Endothelial protection in surgery; early transplant.
It is recommended to visit the Ophthalmology department; an appointment can be booked on this platform before the visit.
