After-Cataract (Posterior Capsular Opacification)

After-cataract (posterior capsular opacification, PCO) is clouding of the posterior lens capsule after extracapsular cataract extraction, due to proliferation of residual lens epithelial cells. It causes gradual blurred vision months/years after surgery. Treatment: Nd:YAG laser posterior capsulotomy to restore the visual axis; this is a simple outpatient laser procedure.

Causes and Pathogenesis

Residual lens epithelial cells proliferate and cloud the posterior capsule.
