Retinal Detachment

Retinal detachment is separation of the neurosensory retina from the retinal pigment epithelium. Types: rhegmatogenous (retinal break), tractional (diabetic vitreous traction), exudative (inflammation/tumor). Clinical: photopsia, floaters, and a progressive curtain of visual-field loss. It is an ophthalmic emergency risking permanent vision loss if the macula detaches. Treatment: urgent surgical repair - scleral buckle, pars-plana vitrectomy, pneumatic retinopexy depending on type; treat underlying cause for exudative.

Common Symptoms

Flashes/floaters; progressive visual-field curtain; reduced vision if macula off
