Primary rhegmatogenous retinal detachment is spontaneous separation of the neurosensory retina due to a retinal break, associated with posterior vitreous detachment and risk factors such as high myopia, cataract surgery, and family history. Clinical: photopsia, floaters, and progressive visual-field curtain. It is an emergency; delay threatens central vision. Treatment: scleral buckle, pars-plana vitrectomy, or pneumatic retinopexy depending on break/location; treat any associated PVR.
Flashes/floaters; visual-field curtain; reduced central vision if macula off; high myopia/PVD
Vitreous traction creates a retinal break; fluid passes under the sensory retina, detaching it.
Urgent buckle/vitrectomy/pneumatic retinopexy; treat PVR
Symptoms education; high-myopia follow-up; treat retinal breaks early.
It is recommended to visit the Ophthalmology department; an appointment can be booked on this platform before the visit.
