Proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) is formation of fibrous/proliferative membranes on retinal surfaces after retinal detachment surgery or trauma, causing fixed folds and tractional retinal detachment. It is the commonest cause of failed retinal detachment surgery. Treatment: complex pars-plana vitrectomy with membrane peeling, retinectomy, and long-acting tamponade (silicone oil); high recurrence risk.
Recurrent detachment; fixed retinal folds; after detachment surgery/trauma; reduced vision
Retinal pigment epithelial/glial cells proliferate on retinal surfaces, forming contractile membranes.
Complex vitrectomy with membrane peel/retinectomy/silicone oil; high recurrence
Early detachment repair; avoid PVR triggers.
It is recommended to visit the Ophthalmology department; an appointment can be booked on this platform before the visit.
