Congenital nystagmus is involuntary, rhythmic oscillation of the eyes beginning in infancy, often associated with albinism, congenital cataract, retinal dystrophy, or as an idiopathic motor nystagmus. It reduces visual acuity and may be associated with an abnormal head posture (null point). Treatment: correct refractive error; treat underlying sensory deficit; low-vision aids; strabismus (Kestenbaum) surgery to move the null point and reduce abnormal head posture; no cure for the nystagmus itself.
Involuntary oscillatory eye movements since infancy; reduced visual acuity; anomalous head posture; by sensory/motor type
Sensory defect (albinism/cataract/retinal disease) or motor disorder causes oscillatory eye movements.
Correct refraction; treat sensory deficit; low-vision aids; Kestenbaum surgery for abnormal head posture
Treat infantile cataract/albinism; low-vision rehab.
It is recommended to visit the Ophthalmology/Pediatric-Strabismus department; an appointment can be booked on this platform before the visit.
