Massive amniotic fluid aspiration (amniotic fluid aspiration syndrome) is fetal aspiration of amniotic fluid in utero/delivery; usually clean fluid; transient dyspnea/cyanosis; mild, good prognosis. Inflammatory reaction = aspiration pneumonia.
Cyanosis; dyspnea; perioral cyanosis; coarse lung markings; persistent cyanosis after birth; tachypnea
Fetal hypoxia in utero/delivery → gasping aspiration; vernix/cornified cells cause chemical/mechanical pneumonitis. Abnormal labor; fetal distress; macrosomia (≥4000g).
Supportive care; oxygen; ventilation
