Cutaneous Candidiasis

Candidiasis is fungal disease of skin/mucosa/viscera by Candida (mainly C. albicans). GI/pulmonary most common; also urethritis/pyelonephritis/endocarditis/meningitis/sepsis. Secondary to chronic wasting disease + long-term broad-spectrum antibiotics/steroids/chemo/radiotherapy.

Common Symptoms

Vesicle; scale; Candida infection; pustule; Yi Yu; sepsis; immunodeficiency; benign reactive change; crusting; meningitis

Causes and Pathogenesis

Candida commensal in nature/mouth/GI/URT/vagina/skin; opportunistic. Disease depends on inoculum/virulence/route/host resistance. Diabetes/tumor/wasting/antibiotics/steroids/immunosuppressants/catheters/transplant/radiation/chemo predispose. Mostly endogenous. ~8 pathogenic species; C. albicans most virulent; others cause disease only in severe immunosuppression.

Treatment

Drug therapy, supportive therapy

Preventive Measures

Treat underlying disease (diabetes/tumor/wasting); judicious antibiotics/steroids/immunosuppressants; clean/dry skin folds (especially obese/sweaty); oral/vulvar hygiene.
