Ewing sarcoma is a primary malignant bone tumor of small round cells; modern view: primitive neuroectodermal tumor of bone/soft tissue. Children/adolescents; 6-8% of primary bone tumors. Early symptoms: pain/swelling, nerve/spinal cord injury, low fever, elevated ESR/HDL-cholesterol, anemia.
Bladder/bowel incontinence; elevated ESR; paraplegia; persistent pain; soft tissue swelling
TCM: cold stagnation, blood stasis-heat, kidney deficiency. Gross: firm when intraosseous, soft/friable after cortex breakthrough; gray-white nodules, secondary purple/yellow necrosis/cysts. Micro: uniform small round cells with ill-defined borders; sheets with scant reticulin; abundant PAS-positive glycogen (differentiates from reticulum cell sarcoma/neuroblastoma).
