Renal glycosuria is a benign proximal renal-tubular defect causing impaired glucose reabsorption, with glucose in urine despite normal blood glucose. It is usually asymptomatic and found incidentally; may be familial or acquired. It must be distinguished from diabetes mellitus (normal blood glucose/HbA1c). No specific treatment; monitor for potential volume depletion and distinguish from Fanconi syndrome.
Glucose in urine; normal blood glucose; usually asymptomatic; polyuria rarely
Reduced SGLT2-mediated proximal-tubular glucose reabsorption causes urinary glucose loss with normal serum glucose.
Usually no treatment needed; confirm normal glucose tolerance; distinguish from diabetes/Fanconi
Distinguish from diabetes; monitor electrolytes.
It is recommended to visit the Nephrology department; an appointment can be booked on this platform before the visit.
