Thyroid Cyst

Thyroid cysts are fluid-filled lesions within the thyroid gland; most are benign (colloid cyst, hemorrhagic degeneration of a nodule, lymphatic cyst). They may be solitary or multiple, fluctuate in size with hemorrhage, and are usually asymptomatic unless large/compressive. Solid components on ultrasound require FNA to exclude malignancy.

Common Symptoms

Painless fluctuant neck lump; sudden enlargement if hemorrhage; compressive symptoms if large

Causes and Pathogenesis

Colloid accumulation, hemorrhagic degeneration of a nodule, or lymphatic malformation forms a fluid-filled cavity.

Treatment

Observation; aspiration; sclerotherapy; surgery for recurrent/suspicious solid-complex cysts

Preventive Measures

Ultrasound follow-up; aspirate if enlarging.
