The pathology of disease

Endocrine disorders are dysfunctions of hormone-producing glands (pituitary, thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal, pancreatic islets, gonads) resulting in hormone deficiency, excess, or resistance. Clinical presentations vary widely by gland and axis. Diagnosis relies on hormone levels, dynamic stimulation/suppression tests, and imaging. Treatment: hormone replacement for deficiency, surgery/radiation/medical suppression for excess, and management of tumors.

Common Symptoms

Variable by gland: fatigue, weight change, temperature intolerance, growth/sexual-development changes, polyuria/polydipsia, mood change

Causes and Pathogenesis

Autoimmune, neoplastic, genetic, infectious, iatrogenic, or nutritional injury disrupts hormone production/action.

Hormone replacement; surgery/radiation for tumors; medical suppression; lifestyle and supportive care

Preventive Measures

Newborn screening; regular endocrine follow-up; medication/iodine/nutrition adequacy.
