The pathology of disease

Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP, interstitial plasma cell pneumonia) is rare, in immunocompromised. First line TMP 20mg/kg/d + SMZ 100mg/kg/d for 2-4 weeks; clindamycin/caspofungin alternatives.

Common Symptoms

Cyanosis; dyspnea; diarrhea; restlessness; low fever; pneumothorax; weight loss

Causes

Pneumocystis carinii (fungus); trophozoites/cysts; immunocompromised host.

Treatment

TMP-SMX; steroids; supportive

Prevention

Prophylaxis in AIDS/immunosuppressed.
