The pathology of disease

Pulmonary sporotrichosis is chronic pulmonary fungal disease by Sporothrix schenckii; common deep mycosis.

Common Symptoms

Lymphadenopathy; dyspnea; low fever; cyanosis

Causes and Pathogenesis

(1) Etiology: S. schenckii (Fungi/Deuteromycotina/Hyphomycetes/Moniliales), dimorphic. (2) Pathogenesis: granulomatous skin/mucosal/lymphatic; pulmonary = segmental bronchitis/bronchopneumonia; nonspecific inflammation with neutrophils/lymphocytes/plasma cells/epithelioid cells; chronic non-specific granuloma → nodular pneumonia. Typical lesions: central purulent microabscesses (neutrophils + histiocytes/lymphocytes) → epithelioid/multinucleated giant cells → lymphocytes/fibroblasts. PAS after amylase: 4-6 µm round/oval bodies; cigar bodies 4-8 µm and asteroid bodies.
