Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Cardiomyopathy

Arrhythmogenic right-ventricular cardiomyopathy is genetic disease with fibrofatty replacement of the right ventricle, presenting with ventricular arrhythmias, syncope, and sudden cardiac death (SCD), often in young athletes. Treatment: beta-blocker; ICD for SCD prevention; avoid intense competitive sport; treat heart failure; catheter ablation for recurrent VT; family screening.

Common Symptoms

Palpitations/syncope; ventricular arrhythmia; RV dilation/dysfunction; family history; young athletes

Causes and Pathogenesis

Desmosome gene mutation causes fibrofatty RV replacement and arrhythmias.

Treatment

Beta-blocker; ICD for SCD; avoid competitive sport; ablation for VT; treat HF; family screening

Preventive Measures

Avoid intense sport; family screening; ICD for high risk.
