Sinus Arrhythmia

Sinus arrhythmia is variation in the sinus-node cycle length causing irregular P-P intervals, typically respiratory (phasic with breathing) or nonrespiratory. It is common in children/young adults and usually benign. Treatment: reassurance; no specific therapy; investigate underlying cause if nonrespiratory or symptomatic (myocarditis/drugs).

Common Symptoms

Usually asymptomatic; irregular sinus rhythm on ECG; respiratory variation; common in youth

Causes and Pathogenesis

Respiratory vagal modulation causes phasic variation in sinus rate; nonrespiratory form may indicate disease.

Treatment

Reassurance; no therapy; investigate cause if nonrespiratory/symptomatic
