Overactive bladder (OAB) is a syndrome characterized by urgency, often with frequency and nocturia, with or without urge incontinence, clearly affecting daily life. As society ages and diabetes and neurologic disease increase, OAB incidence rises yearly.
Increased postvoid residual; reduced bladder capacity; bladder dysfunction; incomplete emptying; polyuria; urgency
The cause is unclear; four proposed: 1. detrusor instability: non-neurogenic abnormal detrusor contraction during filling; 2. bladder sensory hypersensitivity; 3. reduced bladder capacity; 4. abnormal pelvic floor/urethral function.
Bladder training, medication, surgery when needed
Control fluid intake, treat diabetes and neurologic disease, bladder training.
