Clostridium perfringens Enteritis

传染科

Common symptoms

腹痛、腹泻

The pathology of disease

Clostridium perfringens, also known as Clostridium welchii, is widely distributed in the natural environment and found in the digestive tract of almost all warm-blooded animals, as a member of the normal intestinal flora of humans and animals. It can cause gas gangrene in humans and enterotoxemia and necrotizing enteritis in many animals, and is the main pathogen of sudden death in livestock in China in recent years. Enteritis caused by C. perfringens is clinically divided into food poisoning-type enteritis and necrotic enteritis.

Common Symptoms

Abdominal pain; diarrhea

Causes and Pathogenesis

Food poisoning-type enteritis: C. perfringens is a Gram-positive, spore-forming species of the genus Clostridium. Based on soluble antigens produced, it is classified into types A, B, C, D, and E. Food poisoning-type enteritis is mostly caused by type A. This bacterium produces various exotoxins; the alpha toxin is a lecithinase that hydrolyzes lecithin and has hemolytic action. The enterotoxin causing food poisoning-type enteritis is produced only during sporulation. The bacterium is widely distributed in nature, found in normal human and animal feces, and detectable in soil, garbage, flies, water, milk, and food. Food vehicles are mainly various meats and meat products. After meat is contaminated, heat treatment activates rather than kills spores, promoting growth; oxygen expelled from food by heat creates an anaerobic environment favoring proliferation. Dangerous levels require viable counts of 10^6 to 10^7/g or above. The enterotoxin mechanism is similar to that of Vibrio cholerae, with no significant pathological changes in the small intestinal mucosa. Necrotic enteritis: The alpha and beta toxins produced by type C C. welchii are the direct cause of the characteristic intestinal mucosal necrosis in infected chickens.

Treatment

Drug therapy, supportive therapy, surgical treatment

Preventive Measures

Strengthen feeding management and environmental hygiene, avoid dense housing and litter accumulation, store feed properly, reduce bacterial contamination, and strictly control various internal and external factors. Most importantly, strengthen dietary hygiene, especially cold storage of meat products in summer and autumn, and thorough cooking before eating. This can effectively prevent and reduce this disease.

Department to Visit
