Free-living amoeba infection includes Naegleria fowleri (primary amebic meningoencephalitis, freshwater) and Acanthamoeba (keratitis in contact lens, granulomatous amebic encephalitis in immunocompromised); rare; high fatality.

Symptoms

Naegleria: acute meningoencephalitis after warm freshwater. Acanthamoeba: keratitis (contact lens), GAE in immunocompromised

Causes

Naegleria fowleri; Acanthamoeba; Balamuthia; free-living amoebae.

Treatment

Miltefosine + multi-drug; early; prevent by avoiding warm freshwater; contact lens hygiene
