Paragonimiasis

Paragonimiasis: mechanical damage by migrating schistosomulae/adults + immune response. Raw/undercooked crab/crayfish/crab/water shrimp/water insects. 1st intermediate: 20+ freshwater snails; 2nd: crustaceans; definitive: human/dog/cat/pig reservoirs.

Common Symptoms

Cystic mass; chest pain; diarrhea; hemoptysis; night sweats; abdominal pain; low fever; nausea; toxemia

Causes and Pathogenesis

~40 Paragonimus species; 8 pathogenic to humans (P. westermani, P. skrjabini mainly).

Treatment

Drug therapy, supportive therapy

Preventive Measures

No raw crab/crayfish/water; treat patients; cull reservoir animals; proper sputum/feces disposal (quicklime); treat fully.
