Fasciolopsiasis

Fasciolopsiasis = Fasciolopsis buski in human/pig intestine; GI symptoms. Large fluke with strong suckers → mechanical mucosal damage; malnutrition, anemia, edema, ascites, obstruction in heavy infection.

Common Symptoms

Borborygmi; diarrhea; anorexia; ascites; severe pain; abdominal pain; convulsion; nausea; flatulence; bruxism

Causes and Pathogenesis

Raw aquatic plants with metacercariae. Suckers → mucosal inflammation/petechiae/ulcer; eosinophilic/PMN/lymphocytic infiltrate; malabsorption; allergic metabolites. Worm burden: few to thousands; obstruction.

Treatment

Drug therapy, supportive therapy

Preventive Measures

Cook water caltrop/water chestnut; wash/peel raw; fecal management; pig feed treatment; no pig grazing on aquatic plant ponds.
