Biliary tract infection refers to ascending bacterial infection of gallbladder/bile ducts (cholecystitis/cholangitis), usually from obstruction (stones/stricture/tumor), presenting with fever, RUQ pain, jaundice, and possible sepsis. Treatment: IV fluids; broad-spectrum antibiotics; biliary drainage (ERCP/PTCD) for cholangitis/sepsis; treat source (stone extraction/stent/tumor); cholecystectomy for acute cholecystitis; monitor for suppurative cholangitis/liver abscess; follow-up imaging (MRCP/US).
Fever; RUQ pain; jaundice; by obstruction/infection
Obstruction + bacterial ascent causes biliary infection.
Antibiotics; biliary drainage; treat source; monitor sepsis
Early biliary decompression; treat stones/strictures.
