Multi-infarct dementia is a vascular dementia caused by multiple cortical and subcortical ischemic strokes/infarcts, producing stepwise cognitive decline, focal neurologic signs, and gait/mood disturbance. Risk factors: hypertension, diabetes, atrial fibrillation, atherosclerosis. Treatment: control vascular risk factors, antiplatelet therapy, manage atrial fibrillation, cognitive rehab, and caregiver support.
Stepwise cognitive decline; focal neurologic signs; gait disturbance; mood lability; history of strokes; hypertension/diabetes
Multiple infarcts destroy enough cortical/subcortical tissue to impair cognition, in a stepwise, vascular-risk-driven course.
Control BP/diabetes/lipids; antiplatelet/anticoagulant; cognitive rehab; cholinesterase inhibitors may help
Control vascular risk factors; antiplatelet; treat atrial fibrillation.
It is recommended to visit the Neurology department; an appointment can be booked on this platform before the visit.
