Hallervorden-Spatz disease (now pantothenate kinase-associated neurodegeneration, NBIA/PKAN) is an inherited neurodegeneration with brain iron accumulation, presenting in childhood with progressive dystonia, rigidity, parkinsonism, dysarthria, dementia, and pigmentary retinal degeneration. MRI shows the 'eye-of-the-tiger' sign in the globus pallidus. There is no cure; treatment is supportive (antidystonic agents, rehab, nutrition/respiratory support).
