Cerebrovascular Disease

Cerebrovascular disease encompasses disorders of the cerebral and precerebral vessels, including ischemic stroke, intracerebral/subarachnoid hemorrhage, TIA, intracranial aneurysm, cerebral venous thrombosis, and vasculopathies (Moyamoya/arteriovenous malformation). Treatment: acute stroke care (imaging/reperfusion); treat underlying cause; secondary prevention (antiplatelet/anticoag/statin/risk-factor control); surgical/endovascular intervention as indicated; rehab; primary prevention (control BP/lipids/DM/no smoking).

Common Symptoms

Focal deficits/headache; by subtype (ischemic/hemorrhagic/TIA/aneurysm/venous/vasculopathy)

Causes and Pathogenesis

Atherosclerosis/hypertension/embolism/aneurysm/venous thrombosis/vasculopathy cause cerebral vessel disease.

Treatment

Acute stroke care; treat cause; secondary prevention; intervention as indicated; rehab; primary prevention

Preventive Measures

Control BP/lipids/DM; no smoking; anticoagulate AF; treat carotid disease.
