Contrast-associated nephropathy (CAN) is a sharp drop in renal function caused by contrast medium. Common contrast is highly hypertonic with up to 37% iodine, filtered unchanged by glomeruli and not reabsorbed by tubules; dehydration raises renal concentration and can cause acute renal failure.
Shock; low blood pressure; uric acid crystals; anuria; cold sweats; oliguria; palpitations
Risk factors: pre-existing renal insufficiency; diabetes with renal insufficiency (over 10 years, over 50 years, cardiovascular complications); congestive heart failure (NYHA class IV); nephrotic syndrome. Common contrast is hypertonic, filtered unchanged and not reabsorbed; dehydration raises renal concentration and causes acute renal failure.
Hydration, supportive treatment
Hydrate before contrast, avoid dehydration, assess renal risk, and monitor renal function after contrast.
It is recommended to visit the nephrology department; before the visit you may first book an appointment and connect with experts through this platform.
