Salt-losing nephritis is a tubular dysfunction disease of various causes, first reported by Thorn in 1944, so also called Thorn syndrome. It is a special group of renal disease characterized by severe renal salt loss, most often chronic pyelonephritis, then medullary cystic disease, polycystic kidney and nephrocalcinosis.
Coma; weakness; syncope; anorexia; azotemia; nausea; polyuria; salt loss; hypotension
Causes: chronic interstitial nephritis and chronic pyelonephritis; medullary cystic disease such as polycystic kidney; renal TB and nephrocalcinosis; bilateral renal hypoplasia; obstructive nephropathy. Mechanism: interstitial disease damages tubular epithelial cells, blunting response to aldosterone, reducing NaCl reabsorption and causing large urinary NaCl loss.
Salt supplementation, treat cause, supportive treatment
Treat underlying chronic renal disease and monitor electrolytes.
It is recommended to visit the nephrology department; before the visit you may first book an appointment and connect with experts through this platform.
