Renal damage in leukemia

血液科

Common symptoms

蛋白尿、慢性肾功能不全、尿闭、尿路结石、多尿、尿崩

The pathology of disease

Leukemia is a malignant leukocyte proliferation; when cells enter the blood they infiltrate and destroy other tissues and organs. Leukemia can cause renal damage; the kidney is the 3rd most commonly infiltrated organ in acute leukemia, mainly by direct infiltration or metabolites, also via immune reactions and electrolyte disturbance, presenting as acute renal failure, chronic renal insufficiency, nephritic or nephrotic syndrome.

Common Symptoms

Proteinuria; chronic renal insufficiency; anuria; urinary calculus; polyuria; diabetes insipidus

Causes

Renal damage may relate to the kidney being hematopoietic in embryogenesis; acute leukemia most often infiltrates the kidney, especially acute monocytic and lymphoblastic leukemia; leukemic cells directly infiltrate the renal parenchyma.

Treatment

Treat leukemia, supportive renal care

Prevention

Monitor renal function during leukemia treatment.
