Leukemia

Leukemia is a malignant clonal hematopoietic stem cell disorder; leukemic cells fail to mature, accumulate in marrow/hematopoietic tissues and infiltrate organs, suppressing normal hematopoiesis. Symptoms: anemia/bleeding/infection/organ infiltration. Treatable: chemo/radiation/hormones/BMT; cure rate age-dependent (children better).

Common Symptoms

Coma; hepatosplenomegaly; petechiae; splenomegaly; bone pain; severe pain; persistent fever; madarosis; dry ear necrosis

Causes

Type C RNA retrovirus (only adult T-cell leukemia proven human). Genetics: familial 8.1% vs 0.5%; Down/Bloom/Fanconi; Sydney line; HLA-A2/A9. Radiation 1-9 Gy; latency 2-16y. Benzene, alkylating agents.

Treatment

Drug therapy; supportive care

Prevention

Avoid radiation/benzene/viruses; cautious drug use (chloramphenicol/phenylbutazone); occupational protection; healthy building materials.
