Autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA) is a group of anemias caused by overactive B lymphocytes producing anti-self-RBC antibodies that increase RBC destruction. Sometimes RBC destruction is compensated by marrow erythropoiesis and no anemia occurs clinically - called autoimmune hemolysis (AIH). Some patients have only detectable anti-RBC antibodies without hemolysis.
Anemia; jaundice; splenomegaly; dark urine
Autoantibodies (IgG/IgM) bind RBC antigens, causing complement activation or splenic macrophage destruction. Primary (idiopathic) or secondary to lymphoma, CLL, SLE, infection, drugs.
Corticosteroids, immunosuppressants, transfusion, splenectomy
Treat underlying disease; avoid known drug triggers; monitor CBC.
It is recommended to visit the Hematology department; an appointment can be booked on this platform before the visit.
