Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) is a syndrome of widespread intravascular clotting activation causing microthrombi in small vessels, consumption of platelets and coagulation factors, and secondary hyperfibrinolytic bleeding. Triggers: severe infection/sepsis, major trauma/burns, malignancy, obstetric complications (amniotic-fluid embolism, placental abruption), snake bite.
Widespread bleeding; petechiae/ecchymoses; hypotension; organ dysfunction; shock
Circulating procoagulants (tissue factor, bacterial endotoxin) activate global coagulation, forming microthrombi that consume platelets/factors; secondary fibrinolysis then causes bleeding.
Treat underlying cause; supportive care; platelets/FFP/cryoprecipitate; heparin in selected cases
Early recognition and treatment of underlying trigger; close monitoring.
It is recommended to visit the Emergency department; an appointment can be booked on this platform before the visit.
