Thrombocytopenic purpura is purpura caused by platelet count below normal (<100x10^9/L). It is divided into primary (idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura) and secondary (due to drugs, infection, marrow infiltration, SLE, DIC, hypersplenism).
Skin petechiae/ecchymoses; mucosal bleeding; gingival/nasal bleeding; heavy menses
Platelet reduction from decreased production, increased destruction, or sequestration; low platelets impair primary hemostasis causing mucosal/petechial bleeding.
Treat underlying cause; corticosteroids/IVIG for ITP; platelet transfusion for severe bleeding; treat infection/drug withdrawal
Rational drug use; treat underlying disease; avoid trauma/aspirin.
