Hyperuricemia is elevated serum uric acid (commonly >420 umol/L in men, >360 umol/L in women). It may be asymptomatic or lead to gouty arthritis, tophi, uric-acid renal stones, and renal damage. Causes: overproduction (high-purine diet, alcohol, myeloproliferative disease) or underexcretion (renal, diuretics, metabolic syndrome). Treatment is for gout/tophi/stones: low-purine diet, limit alcohol, allopurinol/febuxostat urate-lowering therapy.
Often asymptomatic; gouty arthritis; tophi; renal colic/stones; hypertension/metabolic-syndrome association
Uric-acid overproduction or renal underexcretion raises serum urate; monosodium-urate crystals deposit in joints/kidneys causing gout/stones.
Low-purine diet; limit alcohol/fructose; allopurinol/febuxostat; acute gout treated with NSAIDs/colchicine; hydration
Low-purine diet; limit alcohol; hydration; control weight/renal function.
It is recommended to visit the Rheumatology department; an appointment can be booked on this platform before the visit.
