Appendicitis

Appendicitis is inflammation of the vermiform appendix (obstructive/fecalith), presenting with periumbilical pain migrating to right lower quadrant, fever, nausea/vomiting, and leukocytosis. Treatment: prompt appendectomy (laparoscopic/open); perioperative antibiotics; NPO pre-op; IV fluids; treat perforation (washout/drainage); treat abscess (percutaneous drainage + antibiotics, interval appendectomy); pathology; early surgery lowers perforation risk; follow-up.

Migrating RLQ pain; fever; nausea/vomiting; leukocytosis; by fecalith obstruction

Obstruction leads to bacterial overgrowth, inflammation, and possible perforation.
