Intestinal obstruction is blockage of bowel (mechanical: adhesions/hernia/tumor/volvulus; functional: ileus), presenting with abdominal pain, distension, vomiting, and obstipation. Treatment: NPO; nasogastric decompression; IV fluids/electrolytes; imaging (CT) to identify cause/strangulation; conservative (NPO/NG) for simple/functional; surgical exploration/resection for mechanical (adhesions/hernia/tumor/volvulus), strangulation (fever/tachycardia/constant pain), or ischemia; antibiotics if compromised; monitor for ischemia; follow-up; treat underlying cause (tumor/hernia).
Abdominal pain; distension; vomiting; obstipation; mechanical/functional
Mechanical block or functional ileus causes bowel obstruction.
NPO/NG decompression; IV fluids; surgery if mechanical/strangulation; treat cause
Treat hernias/tumors; minimize adhesions; early recognition.
