Bladder stones

Bladder stones form in the bladder, primary or secondary. Primary stones form in the bladder, mostly from malnutrition and common in children, now declining with development; secondary stones come from the upper tract or follow lower-tract obstruction, infection, foreign body or neurogenic bladder. In developed regions they occur in older men with prostatic hyperplasia or urethral stricture; in poor regions they are common in children; women are rarely affected.

Common Symptoms

Voiding disorder; suprapubic pain; urethral calculus; bladder diverticulum; urgent urination; severe pain; acute urinary retention; hesitancy; dysuria; urgency

Causes

Besides malnutrition, lower-tract obstruction (prostatic hyperplasia, urethral stricture, bladder neck tumor), infection, bladder foreign bodies and metabolic disease cause secondary bladder stones.

Treatment

Cystolithotomy, lithotripsy, treat obstruction

Prevention

Treat lower-tract obstruction, ensure nutrition, and avoid bladder foreign bodies.
