A urethral diverticulum is a cystic space around the urethra communicating with it, congenital or acquired. Congenital ones are common in women, usually single, between urethra and vagina; in men they lie on the ventral urethra at the penoscrotal junction. Size and neck width determine the degree of obstruction and symptoms.

Also called primary or true diverticulum; the cause is unclear, possibly: (1) congenital underdevelopment of the corpus spongiosum with weak ventral wall bulging under urine pressure; (2) failure of the urethral groove to fuse.
Surgical excision, treat infection
