Preputial edema

Preputial edema is local skin-mucosal swelling from impaired local circulation. After circumcision local veins are cut and rebuilding takes time; incomplete recovery of the local venous system causes swelling from pooled blood and tissue fluid. It is a common complication of redundant prepuce, common in young men who neglect penile hygiene; redundant prepuce or phimosis predisposes. Severe edema can cause glans necrosis, requiring circumcision; some edema follows surgery.

Common Symptoms

Erythema and edema at the meatus; dysuria; preputial swelling

Causes

Local venous obstruction after circumcision, or phimosis/redundant prepuce with poor hygiene causing impaired circulation.

Treatment

Elevation, hygiene, circumcision when needed

Prevention

Keep the prepuce clean; treat redundant prepuce/phimosis.
