Tenosynovitis

骨外科

Common symptoms

手指小关节痛肿、腕部肿胀压痛、手腕在大拇指侧的疼痛、扳机指的弹响、结节、腕关节扭挫伤、拇指不明原因疼痛、筋膜疼痛

The pathology of disease

Tenosynovitis is one of the most common hand surgery diseases clinically, also known as "keyboard hand." It mainly refers to a class of disease in which frequent activity or excessive force of a tendon in a short period, or chronic cold stimulation, causes inflammatory reaction and fibrous degeneration of the tendon sheath tissue, thickening the sheath, causing stenosis of the sheath canal, limiting movement of the tendon within the sheath, while the inflammatory reaction simultaneously causes local pain. Tenosynovitis commonly occurs between the ages of 30-50, and is more common in women than men, with a ratio of 10:1.

Common Symptoms

Pain and swelling of the small finger joints; swelling and tenderness of the wrist; wrist pain on the thumb side; triggering of the thumb; nodules; wrist sprain and contusion; unexplained thumb pain; fascial pain

Causes

It can be caused by injury, overstrain (especially of the hands and fingers), osteoarthritis, certain immune diseases, and even infection. Occupations requiring long-term repeated joint strain, such as typists, instrumental musicians, cargo handlers, and industries requiring long-term computer operation, can trigger or worsen the disease. Common sites include the wrist, fingers and shoulder. Women and diabetic patients are more prone to this disease. Patients feel joint pain and morning stiffness; the morning stiffness is usually most obvious after waking, and symptoms do not clearly ease with frequent activity. The affected joints swell, and may even snap, with restricted joint movement.

Treatment

Supportive treatment, rehabilitation therapy

Prevention

1. When doing housework such as washing, cooking, knitting sweaters and cleaning, pay attention to correct posture of the fingers and wrists; do not over-flex or hyperextend them; do not lift overly heavy objects; and do not exert excessive force with the fingers and wrists. 2. When feeling joint fatigue, take a hot bath to relax tight muscles, or apply a hot compress to sore areas. 3. In winter, use warm water for laundry; after snowfall wear cotton gloves when shoveling snow to keep the hands from cold. 4. Rotate the wrist joint through 360 degrees, or make a fist and then relax, repeating several times, or press the fingers or palm backward a few times; all can effectively relieve hand soreness. 5. For people who work at a desk for long periods, maintain a correct working posture, keep both hands balanced, let the wrists rest on a solid surface, and do not let them hang in the air.
