The pathology of disease

A ganglion cyst is a benign mass containing jelly-like mucus that occurs near the joint capsule or tendon sheath; it is usually unilocular but may be multilocular. The cause is unknown. It is currently thought to be related to degenerative myxoid change or local chronic strain of the connective tissue of the joint capsule, ligaments and tendon sheaths due to local nutritional deficiency. It is more common in young and middle-aged adults, and in women than in men; it mostly develops gradually or is discovered occasionally, and grows slowly. In very few cases the cyst can resolve on its own, but this takes a long time. Most cases respond well to non-surgical treatment but may recur; a very few cases require surgical excision, with good results.

Common Symptoms

Thumb, index and middle fingers; round soft mass of the wrist; carpal tunnel syndrome; Guan Jueyin; local tenderness; nodular protuberance of the wrist; cystic protuberance of the wrist; rice-sized masses of the wrist; tenderness near the hamate; unexplained thumb pain; cyst

Causes

Causes: It occurs on the dorsum of the wrist and foot, and may be related to chronic trauma. It can be caused by injury, overstrain (especially of the hands and fingers), osteoarthritis, certain systemic immune diseases, and even infection. Pathogenesis. Currently most believe that the connective tissue of the joint capsule, ligaments and tendon sheaths undergoes degenerative change due to local nutritional deficiency to form the cyst, and some cases are related to trauma. The cyst wall of a ganglion is dense fibrous connective tissue with no lining cells; the cyst contains colorless transparent jelly-like mucus; the cavity is mostly unilocular but may be multilocular. The cyst is closely related to the joint capsule or tendon sheath; some believe the cavity communicates with the joint cavity or tendon sheath synovial cavity, while others believe they are only connected at the base and do not communicate.

Treatment

Surgery, rehabilitation therapy, supportive treatment

Prevention

Rest the affected area. Because a ganglion cyst is caused by inflammation from repeated excessive friction, people who have had this disease must avoid excessive manual labor. Prevent by maintaining correct posture during work, avoiding excessive joint strain, and resting regularly. The following methods can be used for prevention: soak the feet in hot water often, avoid friction and pressure on the feet (such as walking and cycling), do more foot massage, and eat mainly light foods.
