Sclerosing osteomyelitis, also called Garré osteomyelitis, Garré's disease, idiopathic cortical sclerosis and dry osteomyelitis, is rare. The cause is not fully determined; it is generally considered a low-virulence infection of bone tissue with a strong osteogenic reaction, or multiple small high-pressure abscesses within bone; it mostly occurs in the diaphysis of long tubular bones, favoring the tibia.
Periosteal reaction; depressed brow; bone destruction; sequestrum; fatigue; osteosclerosis; distending pain
It is generally considered low-virulence bone infection with a strong osteogenic reaction, characterized by sclerotic thickening of the cortex, or multiple small high-pressure abscesses; bacterial culture is usually negative; it mostly occurs in long-bone diaphyses, favoring the tibia. It is a progressive, diffuse sclerotic bone inflammation: inflammation causes diffuse medullary fibrosis, promoting subendosteal osteoid proliferation, deposition and calcification; Haversian canal obstruction causes reactive endosteal thickening and spindle cortical hyperplasia. Unlike common pyogenic osteomyelitis, it produces no abscess, sequestrum or fistula; a few wounds may have some pus and granulation, and culture may grow Staphylococcus aureus.
Medication, supportive treatment, surgery
The cause is unknown and there are no effective preventive measures; note that conservative treatment only relieves symptoms temporarily, while thorough debridement and recanalization of the medullary cavity is effective, prevents recurrence and gives good prognosis. Live moderately, rest, balance work and rest, keep an optimistic attitude and regular habits, and avoid tobacco and alcohol.
It is recommended to visit the orthopedic surgery department; before the visit you may first book an appointment and connect with experts through this platform.
