Osteoid osteoma was first described by Jaffe in 1935; benign osteoblastic lesion. 2-3% of bone tumors; long bones, 50-60% in femur/tibia; <1.5 cm; ~2/3 have persistent pain relieved by salicylates.
Dull pain; sacral cyst; scoliosis; bone pain; persistent pain; soft tissue swelling; muscle atrophy
Considered primary benign tumor: slow growth, osteoid replaces normal tissue, surrounding uniform sclerosis, fixed size. Other theories: inflammation/virus, vascular/arteriovenous malformation, compensation. Gross: round/oval nidus ~1 cm surrounded by reactive sclerosis; red-brown if osteoid predominant, white-hard if dense trabeculae. Micro: osteoid/new trabeculae at various maturation, vascular stroma, osteoblasts, occasional osteoclasts.
Surgery; supportive care; rehabilitation
Rare malignant change; watch for cortical disruption/soft tissue mass. Avoid self-medication leading to misdiagnosis.
It is recommended to visit the orthopedic surgery department; before the visit you may first book an appointment and connect with experts through this platform.
