Spontaneous abortion means pregnancy ending on its own before 28 weeks with fetal weight under 1000 g, per the WHO 1966 definition. There is debate on the gestational limit; some countries set 25 or even 20 weeks, because in developed countries newborns over 20 weeks and 600-700 g may survive with full treatment. Given the domestic situation, the limit is still set before 28 weeks. Clinically, abortion before 12 weeks is early, and later is late.
