Eclampsia is convulsions occurring on the basis of preeclampsia that cannot be explained by other causes; it is one of the five hypertensive disorders of pregnancy and an acute severe complication of preeclampsia. It can occur before, during or after delivery; atypical cases may occur before 20 weeks. Eclampsia remains a common maternal life-threatening disease worldwide; in developed countries incidence averages about 1/2000 deliveries, and mortality is about 1%.
