Multiple pregnancy means two or more fetuses in the uterine cavity at once, excluding tubal multiple or tubouterine combined pregnancy. In humans twins are commonest, triplets rare, quadruplets+ very rare. Though physiological, multiple pregnancy has higher complications and mortality than singleton; risk of severe disability doubles in twins and triples in triplets, so it is high-risk pregnancy needing extra attention.
