Rh blood-group antigens are determined by 3 pairs of closely linked alleles on chromosome 1, giving 6 antigens: C/c, D/d, E/e. D was discovered first and is strongest, so anyone with D is Rh-positive. Anti-d is not yet defined, so d only denotes lack of D; DD and dD are Rh-positive, dd is Rh-negative. Rh-negative frequency varies by race: ~15% in whites, 5% in US blacks, under 0.5% in Han Chinese.
