Fetal distress means the fetus shows hypoxia in the uterus threatening its health and life. It is a syndrome and one of the main indications for cesarean section. It occurs mainly in labor but also in late pregnancy; in labor it may be continuation/worsening of late-pregnancy distress. It is commonest before labor, mainly with signs of placental insufficiency; high-risk pregnancies such as hypertensive disorder, chronic hypertension, nephritis, diabetes, heart disease, asthma, severe anemia, post-term.
